Faktor penyebab kelangkaan minyak goreng sedang ditelusuri dengan ketat saat ini. Adanya dugaan penimbunan minyak goreng yang dilakukan oleh para mafia pangan pun beredar di kalangan masyarakat. Asumsi ini tak bisa dipungkiri, mengingat susahnya para warga menemukan ketersediaan minyak goreng di pasar dan toko bahan pangan.
Hal lain yang diduga juga menjadi faktor penyebab kelangkaan minyak goreng adalah karena fenomena panic buying. Beberapa waktu lalu, warga berbondong-bondong memborong semua persediaan minyak goreng di pasaran, dan perilaku ini tak hanya terjadi di satu daerah melainkan di seluruh pelosok Indonesia.
selain fenomena panic buying yang menimpa sebagian besar ibu-ibu rumah tangga ini, ada juga penarikan pasokan minyak goreng dari pasaran oleh distributor. Hal ini menjadi faktor penyebab kelangkaan minyak goreng lainnya yang juga patut dipertimbangkan. Penarikan ini sendiri bertujuan untuk refraksi sekaligus ganti rugi harga lama dari pihak pemerintah.
Kelangkaan minyak goreng yang terjadi saat ini ditengarai karena adanya kenaikan dari sisi permintaan (demand) dan penurunan dari sisi penawaran (supply).
